Thunder Ridge on the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the best overlooks in Virginia.

You can find it at milepost 74.7 and it should be on your short list for your next Parkway visit.

Thunder Ridge is one of the few overlooks with a great sunrise and sunset view. The high viewing platform is perfect for gazing out over the lower valley.

Sunrise is great but Sunset at Thunder Ridge is pure magic with the golden skies and blue tinted mountains! Visiting for sunset is a must.

Visiting Thunder Ridge is an amazing addition to a trip to Peaks of Otter. It only takes about 15 minutes to reach drive between the two popular spots.

More than just amazing views, there is also a short, rugged hike. The distance puts it firmly in the leg-stretcher category.

While the  hike is short it's definitely not flat. The walk takes about 5 minutes but it is really interesting.

Much of the Blue Ridge Parkway closes in winter but this section stays open much longer making it great for sunset on the short winter days.
